The small plate menu is IMHO brilliant. As to be expected, I am not a fan of some items and I have definite opinion on how some of them can be tweaked to suit my taste. Apart from tempting me with flavors that beg for the right wine or beverage, the menu offers the culinary prescriptions to suit what mental or emotional state I am in: it is no accident that many seem familiar but yet offering different if not surprising flavor combinations. At the end of a less than ideal day, I need some comfort food (roasted bone marrow, burrata cheese with roasted tomatoes, poppy lemon tempura smelts, duck meatballs, the mussels with delicious broth to sop bread with); or when things are on an even keel and food can just be one satisfying bite after another I would go for the caramelized chicken livers (I will trade the shiitake with the gnocchi in the old menu), crisp pork belly with kimchi; if and when I think I can share food in the spirit of fun and camaraderie, the kobe sliders, fries or the chicken wings with blue cheese fondue are easy choices.I am simply enthused by the fact that we now have a serious tapas place in Orange County. May the small plate menu live on with its many future editions.
